Responsabilities

Within the University of Namur, the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters has nearly 670 students and 75 staff members, including 30 academics and 35 scientists. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in “Philosophy,” “French and Roman Languages and Literatures,” “History,” “Ancient and Modern Languages and Literatures,” “Art History and Archaeology,” “Germanic Languages and Literatures”, and a Master's degree specializing in Film Culture and Thought. The Department of Philosophy also offers a University Certificate in Philosophy and participates in the Interuniversity Master's Degree specializing in Political Theory and Philosophy (ULB, ULiège, and UNamur).

The person hired as a lecturer will be involved in teaching courses offered by the Department of Philosophy. He/she will be required to conduct research at the ESPHIN Institute – Espace philosophique de Namur (https://esphin.unamur.be/) and possibly at one of the three research centers affiliated with the department: Arcadie. Anthropocene, History, Utopias https://arcadie.unamur.be/, Centre Notre-Dame de la Paix https://esphin.unamur.be/cundp, and SPiN Science&Philosophy in Namur https://www.unamur.be/fr/esphin/centres/spin

Your responsibilities

  • Deliver and implement innovative teaching methods as part of the courses related to the position. This includes 165 hours/year (210 hours total), corresponding to the sum of the following teaching units:

    o DROIB132 Introduction à la philosophie 30h sur 45h

    o LPHIB001 Histoire et textes de la philosophie de l'Antiquité bisannuel 45h + 15h

    o LPHIB002 Histoire et textes de la philosophie du Moyen Age bisannuel 45h + 15h

    o LPHIB207 Philosophie de l’art et de la culture 30h

    o LPHIB332 Questions approfondies de philosophie 30h

    o LPHIB300 Auteurs philosophiques de l'antiquité et du moyen-âge 30h

  • Conduct original research in the field of ancient and/or medieval philosophy (with a possible focus on their contemporary relevance). While the specific research topics are, of course, left to the discretion of the person hired, this research must be carried out within the ESPHIN Institute – Espace philosophique de Namur (Namur Philosophy Center) and must allow for close collaboration with its members and associated centers.

  • Actively participate in the missions and service activities of the Department of Philosophy, the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and the University, within which the person recruited will be required to assume teaching and administrative responsibilities.

Profile

Qualifications

  • Hold a PhD with a thesis in Philosophy (or will have obtained one before 30 june 2026)

Experience

  • Have experience in higher education in the fields covered by the position;
  • Be the author of nationally and internationally recognized publications in the relevant fields of research;
  • Demonstrate active involvement in national professional networks and international research networks.

Skills

  • Ability to collaborate with other members of the Department, the ESPHIN Institute, and associated centers;
  • Ability to establish local, national, and international partnerships and respond to various calls for proposals that could fund their research;
  • Ability to manage and develop a research team;
  • The ability to teach large audiences will be considered an asset.

Key selection criteria

  • The suitability of the candidate's profile in terms of the experience and skills listed above;
  • One or more academic stays at a university other than the one that awarded the doctoral degree (post-doctoral or research stay of at least 3 months in total);
  • The quality of the teaching and research projects provided in the application file;
  • The quality of the interview for selected candidates

Remarks

Start date: 01/09/2026

Contract: fixed term with integration period. The Board of Direction provides for a three-year integration period if the successful candidate is appointed for the first time as part of the academic staff of UNamur. An academic contract is agreed between the parties. At the end of this period, permanent appointment may be obtained after evaluation.
