Responsabilities
Within the University of Namur, the Faculty of Science has nearly 1400 students and 500 staff members, including 60 academics and 300 scientists. It offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs in biology, chemistry, geology, geography, mathematics, physics and veterinary medicine.
You will join the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science, specializing in applied mathematics, and the Namur Institute of Complex Systems (naXys). The members of the Department of Mathematics attached to the naXys Institute develop research in the framework of complex systems that are characterized by at least one of the following three components: the nonlinearity and dynamics of the phenomena involved, the large dimension in which they operate, and the nature of the data that they generate and that describe parts of those systems. The naXys institute is structured into 6 research areas: "Dynamical astronomy, cosmology and astrobiology" (SPACE), "Biological systems" (BIO), "Optics and quantum mechanics" (OPTICS), "Financial econometrics and statistics" (RISK), "Stability and interactions" (STAB), "Optimization algorithms, artificial intelligence & robotics" (AI).
Your missions
Within the Department of Mathematics, you will take on teaching, research and service missions. Specifically:
• A course load of approximately 160 hours/year will be defined with the successful candidate.
This charge will contain courses at both bachelor's and master's levels, for students of mathematics as well as other disciplines. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to offer more specialized teaching related to his or her field of research.
• You will develop a research axis within the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research in Complex Systems naXys (https://www.naxys.be), preferably among the following themes: statistical learning, theory and methodological development in machine learning, computational mathematics, mathematical modeling, heuristic optimization, nonlinear problems, stochastic processes and networks.
• You will consolidate the research project of the Department of Mathematics in Applied Mathematics and Complexity by contributing to the development of one of the existing research areas within naXys.
• You will supervise doctoral theses and master's theses according to your scientific interests.
• You will actively participate in the missions and service activities of the Department, the Faculty and the University.
• You will participate in activities to outreach to the society (popularization, promotion of mathematics, etc.).
• You will consolidate and/or establish links with other institutions around the world in order to stimulate the exchange of ideas, the mobility of people and the cultural richness of our institutions.
• You will participate in administrative meetings and you will be able to teach in French at the end of the probationary period (3 years from the date of appointment).
Profile
Diploma, training and experience
You hold a doctorate with a thesis in mathematical sciences or a diploma recognized as equivalent by the selection committee.
Experience of one or more post-doctoral stays (in institutions other than the one where you defended your thesis) of at least one year in total is required.
You have an international dimension by having carried out research stays abroad and by being part of a network of international collaborators.
Skills (knowledge, business skills and behavioural skills) You have the following skills
• A strong research background and demonstrated interest in applied mathematics and complexity research.
• An aptitude and a great motivation for university teaching.
• An ability to develop relevant ideas for teaching and training students.
• A capacity for integration into existing structures at UNamur, particularly within the Department of Mathematics and the naXys Institute.
• An ability to develop collaborations, with in particular an openness to interdisciplinary research at the national and international level.
• Ability to obtain funding to carry out research projects.
• From abilities to managing a research team.
• An ability to get involved in community service missions.
• A good knowledge of English.
Primary selection criteria
• The qualifications and knowledge/skills listed above.
• The quality of the individual file as well as the adequacy and interaction of the candidate scientific and educational projects with those of the Department of Mathematics.
• The quality of the audition (the lesson, the presentation of the research and pedagogical projects, as well as the answers to the jury questions).

Remarks
Start date: 1st September 2026.
Contract: this position is awarded for a term of three years if the successful candidate is appointed for the first time as part of the academic staff of the University of Namur (according to Article 5 of the Academic Staff Regulations.
At the end of the three-year term, the candidate will be confirmed and appointed on a permanent basis following a positive evaluation by the evaluation commission.
