Description

A 9-months post-doc position is open at the Department of Geography of the University of Namur to work on urban malaria risk mapping in sub-Saharan Africa. The position is available immediately.

Background and context

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that 90% of all malaria deaths worldwide occur in Africa. Malaria intervention across the continent remains focused on rural, highly endemic communities. Yet, urban malaria in sub-Saharan Africa is a major health problem that is likely to become increasingly important. Up to now, the heterogeneity of intra-urban malaria risk has not been captured in continental risk-mapping initiatives and the inter-urban risk variations have not been taken into account in malaria risk modelling.

REACT (Remote Sensing for Epidemiology in African CiTies - http://react.ulb.be/) is a 4-years interdisciplinary project funded by the STEREO-III program of the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO). REACT aims to harness the potential of remote sensing and spatial modelling at different spatial and temporal scales to improve the spatial understanding of intra- and inter-urban malaria risk variations in sub-Saharan Africa. The post-doc will strengthen the malaria risk modelling team for the last year of the project. He/she will benefit from satellite-derived climate, environmental and socio-economic data produced by other teams and will work on integrated models using machine learning methods (e.g. random forests, boosted regression trees).

Profile

The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in quantitative geography, quantitative ecology, environment, biostatistics or public health, should have a strong interest in spatial epidemiology, and should have demonstrated computational, communication and writing skills (English). Knowledge of GIS and programming in R software is an asset.
