Full-time post-doctoral researcher in physics

University faculty : Sciences
Department : Department of Physics
Grade : researcher
Contract : fixed term contract
Category : scientific personnel
Reference : PV/CA681/2017-20

Job description

The candidate will be responsible for the growth of 2D materials by MBE and their characterization mostly by STM. He or she is expected to set up the experiment using existing equipment and to develop international collaborations as the need arises. Active participation in the installation of the new STM controller and software is also expected. The position includes supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate students. As the laboratory will be transferred into a new building in 2019, the candidate shall participate in the reinstallation of the equipment. The candidate is expected to start the job as soon as possible.

Research and education at the department of physics of the University of Namur cover a wide area including structure and properties of matter with particular attention to potential applications related to energy, environment and sustainable development, biomaterials and biointerfaces, and radiation therapy. Building on our experience on synthesis and characterization of graphene, we are now extending our research to other 2D materials. The goal of this project is to grow MoTe2 and other 2D materials by MBE and to characterize them by STM, XPS and ARPES. A room-temperature STM (Park Autoprobe VP2) connected to and MBE chamber and to other UHV characterization tools is available. A new STM controller and software will be installed in spring 2018. XOS and ARPES are available ex situ and low-temperature STM/STS may be available through collaboration with other universities.

A PhD in physics or materials science is required. The candidate must be in an “international mobility situation”, meaning that he or she should not have resided or carried out the main activity (job, studies...) in Belgium for more than 24 months during a period of 3 years immediately preceding the first stay as postdoctoral fellow.

Qualifications and skills

Experience in MBE and STM on inorganic materials. Excellent experimental skills. Ability to lead a research project in a competitive field, as demonstrated by high-level publications in leading journals. Excellent communication ability in English (written and oral). Good knowledge of French is a plus.
