POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN ADVANCED OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPIES OF NANO-INTERFACES

Faculté : Faculté des sciences
Département : Physics department - Research Centre in Physics of Matter and Radiation (PMR)
Grade : Boursier post-doctorat
Contrat : durée déterminée un an renouvelable
Catégorie : personnel scientifique
Poste : Hors-Allocation (CPO)

Missions

A postdoctoral position in advanced optical spectroscopies of nano-interfaces is available in the Lasers and Spectroscopies Laboratory (LLS) of the Research Centre in Physics of Matter and Radiation (PMR) of the University of Namur (Belgium).

The research project will concern the study of the fundamental interactions between nanoparticles and lipid layers adsorbed on surfaces, by exploiting the interfacial sensitivity of vibrational and electronic nonlinear optical spectroscopies. Elucidating the first contacts of NPs with lipid layers mimicking cell barriers is consensually recognized as necessary to understand physiological responses and predict biological functions, which may give rise to nanotoxicity pathways.

To face this challenge, this project will:

  • Investigate simplified models of lipid membranes in interaction with nanoparticles, with an incremental bottom-up approach: (i) gradually increasing the membrane structure complexity, (ii) introducing the environment complexity, (iii) and finally probing the membrane of a cell film;
  • Establish a new strategy to probe those model nano-bio-interfaces thanks to the unique interfacial sensitivity of multiphoton optical processes, such as in vibrational and electronic second order nonlinear optical spectroscopy;
  • Understand how NPs size and shape, interfacial charges and surface chemistry govern the fundamental interactions with membranes.

The Laboratory of Lasers and Spectroscopies (LLS) is part of the Research Centre in Physics of Matter and Radiation of the University of Namur (UNamur). The LLS laboratory applies advanced optical measurements to the characterization of matter, light, and light-matter interactions for fundamental or applied researches. Optical phenomena are used to investigate matter in the gas and solid-state phases, with target topics related to the study of air pollutants, Earth and planetary atmospheres, surface/interface/nanostructured materials properties, biological and bio-inspired systems and biosensor devices. The LLS laboratory exploits the scientific resources of three technological platforms of UNamur, namely the LOS (Lasers, Optics & Spectroscopies), PTCI (Technological Platform High Performance Computing) and MorphIm (Morphology–Imaging) technological platforms (https://directory.unamur.be/entities/platrech).

Profil

The candidate must have a PhD degree obtained between 09-1-2010 and 08-30-2016 and shall not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (job, studies...) in Belgium for more than 24 months during the last 3 years directly before the first stay as a Postdoctoral fellow. He/she has strong background in physics, physical chemistry or surface sciences. Candidates with experience in experimental optics, vibrational spectroscopies, and/or nonlinear optical spectroscopies will have preference. He/she will conduct advanced interdisciplinary research at the frontiers between physics, chemistry, optics and life sciences.
